Doctors Wife is office Manager

Question:

My friend had rhinoplasty over 2 years ago is not happy with it. She talked to the office manager and felt the OM was trying to placate her placate her. She recently found out, through a third party, that the doctor and this office manager are married. Is this ethical for them not to tell their patients this. I and one other friend have gone to this doctor and they do not say they are married-this is a very small office. Is this ethical?

Wondering

Answer:

Dear Wondering:

There would be nothing about it that would violate medical ethics unless some aspect of the work required them to not have any direct relationship. (I can’t think of anything that would fit that, right this moment.)

Many medical offices have the spouse as an office manager–we get many letters from employees complaining about the fact that they have no recourse if they’re not happy with the OM, who is the doctor’s wife.

I realized, as I read your letter, that my dentist, dermatologist and chiropractor are all husband-wife teams. But, they don’t make a point of telling anyone, because there would be no reason to do so.

In the case of your friend’s complaint, probably even if the OM wasn’t married to the doctor she would try to placate her to avoid a complaint or a request for a re-do.

That shouldn’t stop your friend from continuing to seek a remedy if she feels the surgery isn’t helping her breathing problems, doesn’t look right or doesn’t look as promised, or whatever it was that she got the surgery for. When it’s your own face or health it is very irritating to feel that someone is talking down to you about it, I know! Best wishes to your friend about this.

Sending a post-resignation letter

Question:

I’d like to send what I hope are my objective critiques of the workplace at the branch of the Federal Government I used to work at. My feeling is I am a citizen now. Time has passed. I feel its important that government officials know about the sloppy organization that I worked for which is not serving the public to its best ability.

After 14 years I quit a job I enjoyed very much with the Federal Government. It comes down to my new supervisor and I just could not get along. I have been away for a year, and now feel fine about leaving. I feel now a sense of responsiblity to point out problems that I hope can improve the operations. Problems. One internal staff meeting in two years. Three to four staff meetings as an entire agency a year. This to me does not promote staff interaction, concern, awareness, information etc. I believe the Federal Government should set a high example for interactions with employees. Total dis-regard for long breaks and lunches. Many employees would take 25 minute breaks and 45 minute lunches. This was never dealt with though reported and mentioned. One employee would leave a half hour early each day because he said he did not take lunch. This is against the union regulations, yet it has gone on for years.

The Federal Government has a program for employee fitness that was never mentioned to our organization. When i brought it up, our boss said we could not do it. Frustrating that some Federal agencies could get healthy but others could not?

No assigned lunch times for employees. this was problematic as often folks could not rely on others to cover and I and others would often have to wait a long time for someone to cover for lunch. I think its important higher officials know these problems. (heck, even the President)

I respect very much your views and advice. If you think its OK to do I could send you a copy of my letter on this for review? Also whom should I sent it to? Sincerely, Damon Jones

Defamation of Character

Question:

To Whom It May Concern: My name is Victoria Camacho and I would like to request information to whether I have been wrongfully terminated from my job. I was an employee of Duane Reade since September 12, 2007 terminated on September 18, 2009. There was a situation that took place and ended with me being terminated from my job. On August 29, 2009, my scheduled hours to work was from 4:00 p.m. to 12 midnight as a Shift Leader. I was responsible to closing the store by myself with no manager to oversee me. I closed the store and had to report to work the next day at 7:00 am to 12:00 midnight. this is were it started. I worked on 23rd street and live in the Bronx by Baychester plaza. Due to the fact that it was late when closing the store and no manager to report to I borrowed $75.00 dollars from petty cash to insure my safety home. To returned the next day and do a shift from 7:00 am to 12:00 midnight. When i arrived to work the next day i submitted the receipts of the amounts that was charged by the cab to come and go to and from work. I put the receipts or posted them on the shelves above the computer where the manager was able to see it. At that point, no one mentioned anything to me. I was off from work for three days and when i went back to work on Thursday, 9/3/2009 still no one had mentioned anything to me and continued working until September 10th which I started my vacation and return to work September 19th a shift from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. At around 2:00 p.m., I was called into the office and was confronted by Lost prevention who informed me that i was being suspended until further notice due to the fact that i did not notified anyone to use petty cash. At that point, i was dismissed and i called the Union local 338 i reported the situation and was told that they will get back to me. After 10 days later i received a phone call from the Union Rep stating that i was terminated. This was my first time ever using petty cash. According to the company they claim that they have proof that I have done this previous times before. The borrowing of petty cash was done in good faith i submitted receipts and returned the money. I want some counseling in reference to this situation which has affected me some thing terrible. I am suffering from depression, emotional distress and feeling powerless because i have been accused of stealing from a company that I worked for two years.

I would like to hear from someone that can help me understand if I have been wrongfully terminated.

On October 8th I was scheduled to have a meeting with human resources and the union rep on my request to try and explain my situation . In the meeting Basil Mcdonald my union rep did not represent me at all . As we sat in the meeting he asked a question to the fact of why are we here. I thought that was rather strange considering he was the one who scheduled the meeting. In the meeting what was suppose to get address did not get address on my union rep side nor from human resources . Sure as the copy of the other incidence of using petty cash. Which Basil Mcdonald was suppose to investigate which he never did .I left the meeting with the knowledge that I was suppose to get a phone call from him stating where or not I got my job back from the request of my district manager . On October 15th I received a phone call from the union rep that I was fired. That I was not getting my job back. Now its October 23.2009 and Duane Reade is fighting my unemployment. So now from this not only am I fired . I cannot collect unemployment.

Falsely Accused

Question:

I have a problem with my second key manager. Yesterday my second key manager accused me about a social worker. How can I speak with lead supervisor?

Signed,

Worried

Answer:

Dear Worried:

I’m sorry but your question does not provide enough details to understand your concern. It seems that your immediate supervisor accused you of doing something and you want to report it to your lead supervisor.

The best way to do that is to simply ask to talk to the lead supervisor and say that you are concerned about a false accusation. Tell the lead supervisor what was said and also provide any evidence you have that the accusation was false.

Usually just talking in a courteous way and expressing your honest concerns will cause others to listen and try to help.

It could be that your second key manager sincerely believes he or she is correct. Maybe there is something you can do to help convince that person that you have done nothing wrong. If someone else is involved (a social worker or someone else you know) maybe that person would like to speak to your lead supervisor or second key manager, or at least write a letter to support you.

Best wishes with this. If you wish to write again with more details about your situation, please do so.

Being Defamed

Question:

I’m the gm of a fish house in Mi.My supervisor made a deal with a fisherman to allow fisherman to bring onto our property salmon fillets to be vacuum packaged and frozen in our companys freezer with our freezer racks.fisherman claims he brought 9,000lbs to be processed and frozen and admittely did not weigh salmon before it was processed in our facility. The product has remained on our freezer racks for approx 3 weeks.Needing to organize our freezer i instructed our employees to remove frozen salmon from freezer racks and weigh and box in corrugated boxes and document and mark each box weights, the majority of the product was packaged on 9-29-09,on Thur 10-1-09 fisherman called me to inform me he was coming to our facility to package salmon at which time i informed it was 90% done he was estactic that we had taken the initiative to do this for him and thanked me for our effort saying we had just saved him alot of work.He said he would be in later that day to finish up the balance of the salmon packaging and i informed him that we had scheduled the balance to be packaged by the person who did the original 90% packaging to finish it up.He again thanked me for saving him the work of packaging this salmon himself.About 2hrs later on thurs 10-1-09 fisherman showed up at our plant in a very good mood,at that time myself and our plant foreman were working on the floor and having general conversation w/fisherman when fisherman remarked that salmon should come in at 9,0000lbs at which time i told him with what we had already pkgd and estimating what was left to be pkgd it looked like the weight would come in around 6-7,000lbs when he heard this his mood instantly changed with fisherman dropping f-bombs on me that i’m messed up, i remained calm and told fisherman i would be glad to show him our documentation of weight, at which time verbal tirade directed at me turn into calling me a thief, and violently stormedout of our facility.I immediatly reported this to my supervisor who then called fisherman to inform him he did not appreciate him calling our Co thieves at which time fisherman said it was not directed at Co but at myself. Our foreman witnessed all of this. Then on Fri 10-2-09 we sent to the foreman to the fisherman to deliver a check at which time fisherman continued to our foreman to call me a thief and do nothing but cause our Co to lose money.I’ve been selling product in this region for 31 yrs with impeccable integrity. This fisherman has been blackballed from numerous fish processing plants due to a bankrupcy and lack of business ethics, and what are my options regarding him continually defaming my character?

Boss Attends My Meetings Uninvited

Question:

I’m a software designer for a medium-sized company and often meet with my users to fine-tune specifications. So do all the other programmers. It is very atypical for supervisors to attend. We are all competent and experienced and no one needs baby-sitting. Lately my supervisor has been coming to my meetings unannounced and uninvited. I don’t know how he finds out about the meetings or why he’s interested in attending them. I receive many compliments from both my users and our department director and even recently received a raise for my work so I don’t believe his reason is performance related. When I’ve asked him he just says “a little birdie tells me where and when and to come”. I understand that he is my supervisor and has every right to attend but the fact that he secretly locates my meetings and then just shows up with no explanation gives me the creeps. I went from calm and confident to very stressed. I have started to lose sleep. My performance is suffering. What can I do?

Greetings from Big Sis

Question:

Just wanted to say HI and thanks again for your past support. Hope all is well for you and your significant other.

Signed,

Big Sis

Answer:

Dear Big Sis:

What a pleasant surprise it is to get your note. It’s been years hasn’t it since you last wrote the Workplace Doctors? I assume that you have seen our current redesigned site: http://workplacedoctors.com/ If so, I’m sure you have scanned several of our recent Q&As. Associate Workplace Doctor Tina Lewis Rowe continues to hammer out some of the wisest advice possible. I’ve wondered if you have passed on our site to others and if your little sis is getting along well in her job should she still be working. Tina started a site of her own that is beautiful in her use of photographs and neat essays. http://tinalewisrowe.com/ You might find the ones on friends at work and Memorial Day of interest.

Speaking of sites, I recently became aware of the most thoroughly researched writing of the founder of TomDispatch. For example, you might be dismayed if you lived in Utah or Nevada about uranium mining that is described in its most recent issue. tomdispatch.com

I continue my writing. The most recent includes a couple of plays I revised from when I was directing in Georgia many years ago and a 100,000 word draft that has been reworked over ten years based on my experience and thinking about religion. It’s titled Embracing Uncertainty: The Rhetoric of Bible-Based Faith Vs The Rhetoric of Doubt. A more humorous title might be The Unbuckling of The Bible Belt.

I continue painting. Recently I’ve playing with the whimsical style of Kandinsky’s early period; Some 25 years ago I saw an exhibit of those at the Hershorn n DC. If you scroll down through my painting page you will come across a series with a different style. I’ve painted about a dozen in this style but they are not yet posted on my site. The sister of Natalie Glass, the woman, who redesigned our Ask The Workplace Doctors site, ordered three pictures for her bedroom similar to ones I did for her sister. It took three series of three paintings before I got colors that suited her in matching those colors on her bed. http://www.personal.kent.edu/~gorden/

See 0119, Three Sisters is the title I gave it because this woman is one of three sisters. The other attempts to please her are now on the walls of my home and I like them better than the set she bought: 0116 & 0117.

I know my ramblings go well beyond acknowledgement of your thoughtful note, but this is my way of saying, how good it is of you to let me know you are still alive. I remember you as a straight talker with more than common sense.

Signed,

Wondering

Answer:

Dear Wondering:

I think you likely will have to do some research and homework about this, since it seems to be a homework assignment. There is no formula for such issues–they are a matter of whole-organization efforts.

Best wishes with it. Tina Rowe
