Why Is My Pay Less?

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about unfair pay: I feel so depressed at work because cleaners, securities and cooks earn triple times what I earn.

I work with a reputable mining firm as an administrative assistant. I feel so depressed at work because cleaners, securities and cooks earn triple times what I earn. I always feel sad at work and the hurtful thing is no one appreciates my efforts at work. What do I do? I need encouragement.

Signed, Sad On The Job

Dear Sad On The Job:

Your sadness has a long history, at least as far back Biblical times. Employers tend to pay what they have to, and frequently employees learn that others are paid more. The pay is different for many reasons: length of time employed, difficulty of finding people with the desired skills, type of mental and/or physical labor, and amount accepted when hired.

She Makes More $$ Than Me.

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about lower pay although better educated:

I have been employed at the local school district in Texas going on 3 years. When I was hired, two other girls were hired at the same time. One of those girls, Sara, and I spent a lot of the day working together. One day we were discussing how underpaid we were when I found out that Sara makes quite a bit more than I do. We both do the same job; however, I had previous experience working with children and the required schooling for the job (an associate degree), and Sara, who had no prior experience, had to go through a 2-day training (she did not have any degree other than a high school diploma) in order to get the job.

Should I Be Upset?

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about unfair pay:

I work with two other women in a medical billing office. I am a biller. We have one full time collector and the third person that they hired approx. 6 months ago is a part time biller and part time collector. The full time collector and part time collector gets a bonus. The bonus is based on the amt of money that has come in at the end of the month. Their goal is based on the amt that was billed 60 days ago.

If the amt comes in at the end of the month that was billed 60 days ago then they automatically receive $150 flat and then .01 percent (which usually comes out to be approx. the amt of two weeks regular pay). The “clean claims” that are paid within 30 days of being billed (which is what I have billed out and part of what the part time biller/collector) has done and is being counted in on the amt that the collector and part time collector are getting their bonus on, yet no collection called was made and the turn around time was 30 days.

Uneaqual Pay

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about unfair pay: I am paid the minimum wage but my co-worker, who does exactly the same job as me, gets more.

I currently work as a production operator in a factory. I have worked there for 7 years. I am paid the minimum wage but my co-worker, who does exactly the same job as me, gets more. He has been given a pay raise even though my time keeping and punctuality are much better. I feel, as though my boss is doing his utmost to make me feel uncomfortable and wants me to leave, but has no reason to sack me. I feel victimized, and my co-worker has also stated that it seems unfair. Is there anything that I can do about this I am extremely unhappy.
