Bullying Boss

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about bully boss:

My boss is a bully. In a staff of 10 there are three targets of her bullying and I am one of them. Other staff have tried to bring this to her attention but she is not hearing it. She wonders why I don’t speak up or have more confidence. I am just plain afraid of getting emotionally and psychologically beat up yet another time. I am told Bullying is NOT ILLEGAL. So what is my recourse? Is my other choice to find other work?

How To Face A Frustrated Boss?

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about a difficult boss: He demoralizes us every time, demotivates, and suppresses us by pointing up our weaknesses and what we lack.

I’m a victim of a highly frustrated boss who shouts and insults me in the presence of a work group. He demoralizes us every time, demotivates, and suppresses us by pointing up our weaknesses and what we lack. Please tell me how to tackle such a boss.

Signed, Put Down

DearĀ Put Down:

I can tell from what you write that to say you are feeling low is an understatement. Yet you give so little detail it’s difficult to do more that answer your question in general terms. My advice might be different if I knew the nature of your company, how long you have worked under this boss, and also know the quality of your performance. But it is evident that you are frustrated enough to ask for help because you no longer want to bite your tongue and be put down.

What Can I Do About A Problem Boss?

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about bully boss: She tells us we are a team and we must work together to get the job done, then she tells us not to help the person she has over loaded with work

I work in a school cafeteria. I have been here for 3 years. There are 10 other women who work with us. Our boss is unpredictable and I’m beginning to believe she is a bully also. She picks a person on our staff to be mad at, then gives them more work than can be done in the given time frame. She tells us we are a team and we must work together to get the job done, then she tells us not to help the person she has over loaded with work. She has done this with 7 women in the last 3 years and all 7 women have quit, over the pressure. Another girl told me in the 5 years 30 people have quit. She has often replaced these women with her friends and once she even hired one of her sisters. She tells us all the time she will be there long after the rest of us are gone, because they the school will back her up.

Boss Yells

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about abusive boss:

I have been working for this company for 4 years and I need some advice. My boss has been really loud and verbally abusive about things that shouldn’t even matter. Some employees of mine thought that there were cameras put in the place that we work, so we asked his assistant about it. She got mad and stomped into his office. Later in the day, he called us into his office and slammed the door. He yelled and got in our faces. It made me really want to cry. I was scared. I just want to know if I have any rights.

DearĀ Have a Problem Boss:

Any boss/owner, who behaves as does yours, lacks self-control. Apparently his behavior toward you has worked for him and it will continue to do so so-long as you and others he targets do as he wishes. You don’t say what you do when he screams, ignores, kicks doors and throws things. I imagine you duck and get out of the way. When he says frog, do you jump?

Verbal Abuse in the workplace

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about verbal abuse: when my boss asked where I was at and she replied still at the Dr., he started throwing things and yelling profanities in front of the students and customers.

I am wondering what my rights are regarding the verbal assaults that I endure with my boss. I love what I do but no matter what my teaching partner or I do it is never good enough and he is always going off about something. The last straw was today at work 9/02/08. For the past few months my blood pressure has be a stroke level and I have been having chest pains. I have waited for a consult with a cardiologist for 2 months and my boss was aware of if for several weeks. The office visit took the almost 4 hours and after the appointment I had to return to school/office to gather some personal items. He screamed at me about being gone so long. Earlier in the afternoon, I talked to my co-worker, who was covering for me, I kept her updated on what was going on at the Dr. when my boss asked where I was at and she replied still at the Dr. he started throwing things and yelling profanities in front of the students and customers. I love teaching cosmetology and my students but part of my health problems may be coming from my boss. More went on and I have witnesses as to the many times he goes off on these tirades against my co-worker and myself.I did talk to him by phone after work and told him that I did not appreciate being yelled at today and he informed me that he was not yelling and didn’t do anything wrong. Please advise!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do I have legal rights and where or how do I begin?

Hope With A Boss/Owner Like Mine?

Question to Ask the Workplace Doctors about bully boss:

I’ve worked for my printing company for 12 yrs. From almost the beginning of its existence, I have learned the business basically by just being thrown into it. I started at a very low entry level and have worked my way up to a pretty good salary. My company started with just a couple of people and now we have branches all over the US.Now that we are bigger then ever, my boss, the owner, is your classic textbook bully. He embarrasses you in public for no reason puts you down every chance he gets. If you get up to get a fresh pen from the supply closet, he screams why are you not at your desk. What happens when you go to the restroom? You return to a screaming nut. If you are asked to do something that my take a couple of hours, he will ask you every 10 minute till it’s done. At times when this is done to other employees and I am in the office after the employee leaves, he sits there laughing and comments how he loves his power. This was not done early on because he needed his people and that’s why we where taken care of back in those days. When the company first started, he asked a lot of his fellow prior employees to come on board with a great salary and car. And they turned him down. So we proved we are what made the company successful. But in the last couple of years, his prior employees’ companies went under, and they came running to us. They were hired at higher salaries than the six of us who have helped build this place from the start. He has made fun of the way we look, made comments if we gain a little weight, and pries into our personal lives. He makes fun of us every chance he gets. When we need to leave early for the doctor or a far ride to a Wake, we are told no. But if the new people need time to take his motorbike to repair it’s a yes. We are not union and have no HR department. If I leave, I will have to take a cut in salary. Do I have any hope here?
